Palm hit by disappointing smartphone sales

Blog 6: Palm hit by disappointing smartphone sales

This week, I found an article about a fast developing branch. A branch where companies invest a lot in new products to sell enough. The electronic branch, in especially the phone industry, with a lot of big concurrence.

In our country you have Nokia, Samsung, Apple,… who want to have the biggest sales. When you come in a shop as fnac, belcompany,… you will find a lot of brands, this way, you have a lot of competition. When Nokia invests in a new phone with camera then Samsung will invest in the same kind of phone, one month later. They need to see opportunities before the concurrence or they will face some financial problems.

When we look at the Iphone, you see that it is difficult to improve this so it looks difficult for other companies to sell enough and catch or hold up. “Fortunately” for the other companies is the cost for the Iphone so high that people need enough money and they can still rely on other, cheaper products.

In my article of this week we see: “Palm hit by disappointing smartphone sales “. So we see that the smartphone from Palm didn’t have the sales that Palm expects. This is probably because of Google, investing in the “Google's Nexus One”. Moreover there is the Blackberry, iPhone, Samsung,…. It’s difficult for a company as Palm for realize their expectations(target).

Possibly there is a solution for Palm, in the article we can read that there is maybe a takeover coming from Palm by a major companies. So they hope that this investment can help them to make the Palm Pre better.

I understand this problem, there are so many choices in the phone industry. I never heard about the Palm Pre… so it could be a solution making an advertisement in Belgium or Europe to have a bigger range.

  1. Dear Gert

I have already heard about the Palm smartphones before you’ve posted this article. I’m interested in these products so I can tell the following:

While looking around in modern day society, everyone has a portable because of the practical side of it, like: calling, sending a message or even going online on the internet where we want to communicate with each other. It means that nearly everyone has a portable.

I would like to mention that smartphones are hot today. Smartphones are portables who work on an operating system like Microsoft windows mobile for example. Palm was the first who introduced smartphones but after some period of time, other brands, began to bring them on the market. Like Nokia and Samsung for example. The apple phone is the hottest smartphone of today, because it has the quality that apple offers, namely, strength, liability and a good working (mobile) operating system, named MacosX. Thanks to the innovation, the apple iPhone remains the “best buy” on the market. For such a price, you can’t get any better, But if you have something more to spent in the budget then the blackberry is perfect.

But the popularity of the smartphone increases day by day, so everyone wants to have such phone s with touch screen, even the poorer people who can’t afford them want to work overtime to buy a smartphone. So investing in this branch is really needed to beat the competitors. Because, if wanting a high turnover, you need to offer products for people with different standards of life.

The reason for the disappointing smartphone sales of Palm, are the next ones: First, trough the years, the competition increased and secondly the image of palm had lost his quality because the brand isn’t trendy enough for business people and the particulars. Today, you see more Blackberry and iPhones on the street because every half-period of the year, a new model is available. For example, some months after the iPhone, Apple launched the iPhone 3GS on the market, who works faster and offers more functions. The same counts for the Blackberry. Even the well-known company Google produces their smartphone Nexus One. This phone makes it for Palm even more difficult to stay a profitable company.

According to me, the solution for palm can be a taken over by major companies. Other smartphone suppliers could do a bid on this company, because of the liability of the palm. I’m convinced that palm is more user friendly, because they had introduced the first smartphone to the public.

  2. Gert and Dieter,

It's true that everyone knows the iPhone and the Blackberry, but not everyone has already heard of a Palm smartphone. They don't advertise as much as iPhone and Blackberry (seems to me) and we may not forget one of the most important kinds of advertising: the advertisement by friends, family and other people you know with that phone. If a lot of people buy an iPhone, you automatically think that the iPhone is the best and the most reliable choice. I think this is only natural.
A resolution for Palm would be a takeover indeed, for instance by Apple. If the name of Palm is linked to another well-known brand, it is possible that the smartphone of Palm will be sold more. And for Apple, who would take over Palm, it would also be a good investment, because the smartphone of Palm is a very good phone, and indeed very friendly to use as Dieter says.
